Napa is not only wine country. On the eastern slopes of the valley are lush redwood forests, as here in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. To the west high ridges and palisades rise thousand of feet above the famous vineyards.

Even on a family outing I keep my eye out for a telling scene, an iconic image and memory. With my son and two grandkids we hiked up the canyon, following a stream through the woods. Trees were all around, overhanging, overgrown, over-complicated. It took some time to find an opening, an image with a clean background, with straight trunks, a clear forest floor, a simple scene to convey the grandeur and richness of the place.

It was a quick shot, as the kids ran ahead for a moment, a few frames, seen in passing.
