Spring comes late to Lake County. After a successful hike on Sutter Buttes we headed over to the Cache Creek Wilderness area off Highway 20 for a couple of quick hill climbs. The bare grassy knolls with scattered oaks are surprisingly open, yet with no trails they see few visitors. Fire swept through here years ago and on the north slopes there are remnants of manzanita. Here’s the summit of Gibson Hill, blanketed with white windswept grass with the new season’s green sprouts just showing beneath a single track use-trail.
