The tall trees of Redwood Regional Park are all second-growth, a mere reminder of the great forest that once rose up from the narrow canyons to the high ridge tops. Some were so distinctive that they were used in the 19th century as navigation aids by sailors in San Francisco Bay. Alas the old-growth redwoods are gone, logged as part of the insatiable growth of young California. But the quiet forest of regrowth remains, just a few steps from the busy city.
The actual summit of Redwood Peak is marked by rocks and boulders in the woods, with no views of the Bay. But there’s a grand vista looking up as the trees once again reach towards the sky.
